What the work is
A general practitioner (family doctor) is the first doctor people see for most health problems. They see adults and children, diagnose and treat common illnesses, follow patients with chronic conditions, handle prevention and vaccination, and refer patients to specialists when needed.
A typical day
Booked appointments: from colds to checking blood pressure and blood sugar. Explaining a treatment plan to a patient in plain words. Referring a patient for tests when there are warning signs. A preventive check-up and vaccinations. Updating medical records and discussing a difficult case with colleagues.
How to start
- Study at a medical university and complete postgraduate training in general practice.
- Spend time on clinical practice at the bedside and in clinics under a mentor.
- Build your ability to explain: a patient must understand the diagnosis and the plan.
- Be ready to keep learning throughout your career: clinical guidelines are updated regularly.
