What the work is
A cybersecurity specialist protects a company’s data and systems from break-ins, leaks and fraud. They assess risks, set up protection and access rights, watch for suspicious activity, investigate incidents and teach staff to spot phishing. Some specialists work on the “attack side”: under contract, they look for weaknesses in systems so they are closed before criminals find them.
A typical day
Working through alerts from the security monitoring system: which are false alarms and which need action. Checking an email an employee reported. Reviewing the vulnerabilities in a service update with the developers. Preparing a short training session for the sales team. Updating the password and access policy.
How to start
- Learn networking basics, Linux and Windows, and how the web works.
- Study common threats and weaknesses, such as the OWASP Top 10 list.
- Practise legally: on training labs and in CTF competitions, never on other people’s systems without permission.
- Consider starting in a neighbouring role: system administrator, tester, support specialist.
