What the work is
A methodologist designs learning: curricula, courses, training sessions and their materials. They define what participants should be able to do, build the structure and the tasks, choose how learning will be checked, help teachers adopt new approaches and evaluate whether a course worked. Methodologists work in schools and universities, training centres, online schools and corporate academies.
A typical day
Interviewing an expert to gather the content of a new module. Writing the learning outcomes and the course plan. Designing a practical task and its assessment criteria. A meeting with teachers about introducing a new lesson format. Analysing pre- and post-test results from a pilot group.
How to start
- Get a teaching qualification or teaching experience in your field.
- Study instructional design: working back from outcomes, and models for evaluating training.
- Learn the tools for building online courses and materials.
- Build a portfolio of one or two programmes you designed, with their pilot results.
