What the work is
A sales representative works in the field: visiting the shops, pharmacies or other outlets on their route, taking orders, checking stock and shelf display, agreeing new shelf space and promotions, and following up on payment. To shop owners, they are the face of the manufacturer or distributor.
A typical day
Planning a route of 15 to 20 outlets. A shop visit: checking stock and display, taking the next order, talking about a new promotion. Handling an owner’s objection. A photo report on the display in the mobile app. Matching orders and outstanding payments at the end of the day.
How to start
- Build sociability, stamina and the ability to plan your time.
- Learn the basics of sales and merchandising.
- Get a driving licence — many companies require one.
- People are often hired here with no experience and trained on the job; it is a good start for a career in sales.
