What the work is
A system administrator keeps a company’s computers, servers, network, email and work software running. They install and update systems, create accounts and grant access, set up backups, look after security and restore service quickly when something breaks. In a small company this is often one person who does everything; in a large one it is a team split into network, servers and user support.
A typical day
Checking that the overnight backups succeeded. Setting up a desk and access for a new employee. Handling a ticket: the accounting team’s printer will not print. A planned server update outside working hours. Updating the network and password documentation in a secure vault.
How to start
- Learn how a computer works, Windows and Linux, and networking basics (IP addresses, DNS, routing).
- Try building a home lab: virtual machines and a small server of your own.
- Start as a technical support specialist — a common way into the profession.
- In time, learn scripting for automation and cloud services.
