What the work is
A tour guide shows tourists a city, its monuments and museums, and talks about them in a way people remember. They prepare the route and the story, lead the group, answer questions, and keep an eye on time, safety and people’s mood. Many guides work in several languages and specialise in history, architecture, crafts or food.
A typical day
Meeting the group at the hotel and getting acquainted. A tour of the historic centre: the story, photo stops, shade and water on a hot day. Lunch at a local restaurant and agreeing a meeting time. Answering tourists’ questions, including the unexpected ones. A short wrap-up of the day and the plan for tomorrow.
How to start
- Study your region’s history and culture from reliable sources.
- Practise lively speaking: a story must be accurate and interesting at the same time.
- Learn foreign languages — a guide’s biggest advantage.
- Find out which guide certification rules apply where you want to work, and start by assisting an experienced guide.
