What the work is

A graphic designer creates visual material: logos and brand identity, packaging, ad banners, social media posts, presentations, print. They turn a client’s brief into a clear and expressive image, work with type, colour and composition, and prepare files so that they look right both on screen and at the printer’s.

A typical day

Discussing the brief for a series of posts for a new promotion. Sketches and two or three concept options. Making changes after sign-off from the marketer. Preparing a flyer for print: colour model, bleed, resolution. Updating the presentation templates to match the brand book.

How to start

  • Learn the basics of composition, typography and colour.
  • Learn the professional tools: Figma, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, or their equivalents.
  • Build a portfolio of real or study projects that explains the brief and your solution.
  • Learn to take feedback and explain your choices in terms of the client’s goal.
